new earth toned comfy blanket story

Today, I am starting a new crochet project.....a journey, a story that I want to share with you. All three of you. LOL!!  I am calling it my 'new earth toned comfy blanket.

I love looking back at what I have done in my past.  I looked at all of my crochet blogging, wondering if I posted them all on here over the years of my hit and miss blogging. Well, here they are!!

(Due to the nature of this particular post, it is a looong one, sorry)

MY CROCHET FUN

This contains the crochet projects of my past.  Not all of them, of coarse. I have been crocheting well before the days of blogging about them. I remember dreading going to school because I wanted to stay home and crochet some more.

Then there is Braveheart. Oh, how I crocheted, while nurturing our son, especially after his transplant and his long stay at the hospital. I have fond memories of teaching many a med student how to crochet. I believe at least one gal is still crocheting to this day. It took me a long time after Braveheart went to Heaven before I could pick it up again. I 'knew' in my heart, it was ok, and I knew B would understand and even smile about it with pleasure if he were here, but it was a mental thing. So tangible, like it was just not right. How could I pick this up without him??? But...now I did. I am ready and at peace with it. Now, it is a good memory, like time spent with this dear one, missed so...ooooh, so much and each time I pick it up, I am spending a moment with him.

Crocheting always reminds me of our boy, as do birds. I love crocheting in my cozy little sitting room upstairs, with my feet up, the curtain open and all the little birds are chirping about. It is good.
I took up crocheting during our many stays at the hospital. People donated their extra yarn they no longer wanted and I went to work making a 'crazy crochet blanket' for each child. I started with my oldest, knowing he was the first one nearing the 'leave the nest' stage of life. You can see those pictures from the posts above.

For the 'crazy' project, I choose whichever colors I desired, to use for each blanket.  My second born and first born simply got a lovely mix of what looked good, since there were not many blues, (their favorite), but they still loved the earthy, guy colors.

I knew, full well,  my third son, Ninja Boy, would desire a more red featured blanket, as it is his favorite color.

Then came my damsel, who received the girly, pink waves of candy like goodness.

Then, there was the granny, crazy blanket....remember, all of this was the generous donations of people.

I, like many crocheters, love to have those 'easy, brainless' projects going. All of the above were simple single or double crochet stitiches. The kind that is relaxing, requires little thought, but exudes the pleasure of hooking stitches, getting all the benefits of creating something beautiful, while hanging with one's man or some similar endeavor.

Now, like every winter, the fiber and crochet hooks call my name. This time, unlike times in the past, I will embark on a new idea..one that allowed me to pick out the very colors "I" like, by choice, completely, just for "ME"...for my taste, my earthy tone loving taste...oh, I am soooo excited!!

Now, here is my inspiration to whom I must give credit. Lucy at Attic 24. Although, I can safely say that I have likely been crocheting long before she ever picked it up, I found her blog back around the time B was first diagnosed, and so very much enjoyed her colorful, time consuming posts. It was always hit and miss with me, as I rarely have time to set and read blogs, but I tried a few fun projects that I likely would not have attempted without her inspiration. In addition, with all we were going through, I lost interest in crocheting for a bit and her blog, even if only once in a while.
Well, I just so happen to check on her again, after a long absence and was please to see a new twist on a simple, brainless crochet blanket and I got all excited! I have never used so many colors, without it being a crazy blanket, of my own choosing, and this twist makes it a bit more interesting, although still easy. So, here's to a new twist on an old story for me. Thanks to Lucy and all the time she devoted to sharing it with me (us).  Wait until you see all of the color on her blog!!

Now, I will wet your appetite with pictures of the lovely colors that I have chosen. This blanket has been the most 'prep' I have ever done for a blanket. That is, thanks to Lucy. I will tell you more about that in my next post.

***THIS JUST IN....you and me and some of our friends, are joinging in, more locally, on this fun crochet story together, with the intention of working together in cyber fasion, sharing lots of good pictures and lots of fun awing and oowwing over all the fiber goodness. Do not be overwhelmed by Lucy's blog, I will show you what to do here as an America version. There are lots of choices.

You see, I love purples and I love earth tones...very much. I am very happy with this grouping of colors.
I hope to put better pictures here tomorrow.

So, for me, I decided NOT to order the yarn from the wool shop in England. (on Lucy's blog) I might someday, but this time I decided to go to my local craft store, where they had a lovely, set of acrylic yarn, on sale, very soft, with a large variety of juicy, good colors to choose from. These balls of yarn are twice the size needed in Lucy's pattern, but I knew I would use them anyway, plus, I am going to make a larger blanket than twin size.
As much as I would love to use a natural, wool fiber, it was not cost effective for me at this time, for this project. There are very lovely synthetic yarns out there nowadays.
So, be sure to go pick out your favorite colors, or use up your stash, or use less colors if you like, ok?
Stay tuned for more from this journey and encouragment on this project.

wooly, wavy, crochet blanket

Merry Christmas to all from,

 Magnanimous!!

I was given this lovely, mostly wool, with knobby bits, crochet yarn, a couple years ago. I fiddled around with it some in the past, but never really made anything.  Eventually, like most winters, I start hankering for a mindless, hook sensational, crochet project. I was so happy hooking away at this. It turned out much better than I even suspected it would. I love the way it feels, the way it flows and falls so comfy on my lap, so soft and yet somewhat heavy.  I ended up falling in love with the soft, muted colors.

What do you think?

It was so easy, as every therapeutic, mindless crochet project should be.

Here's the hook scoop:

Single crochet stich, J hook, chain across (don't remember number of stitches, so measure what you like) alternating non-equal stripes, for variety, leaving just enough to round out the edging with a lovely single, skip stitch. It turned out to be about baby blanket or lap size.

I love it, especially next to the Christmas tree.

Now, on to the next project for the rest of the winter.

doin' so good!!!!

Braveheart is doing so well I am floating on clouds.  I was even able to meet with a mom and fellow DM friend and visit.  I encouraged the young DMer in her continuing crochet endeavors.  I taught the young onc mom how to start her first chain.  It was wonderful.  I love the interest being shown by young people for these arts.  Feeling blessed today.  I now want to start a cowl, they are so in.  I need to finish two hats a keep working on a cool scarf I am working on.

joyful hearts and crocheting

I just wanted to let you all know what we've been up to. I have so many things to update here. In between all the researching, praying, healing etc...I have been mindlessly crocheting as it is quite relaxing and soothing. I made this for my mom with some stash someone gave me. God is guiding and leading and answering prayer beyond my ability to fathom. Keep praying for that and thanking God for healing. There are many emotions with this whole thing, ups and downs, fears and jubilations. We are so thankful. Mostly He gives us joy and glimmers of hope!! God is good.

in my basket monday

This little stash has been in the works for some time now. Don't get impressed, now. I keep pulling it out occasionally...dreaming of who to give this too. I just love deep purples. I am thinking of a baby that is soon to be born. Will it be a girl??

in my basket monday

Hey, I just made that title up...is that dorky? I thought it was kinda cool. Maybe it's already out there and I don't even know it. Maybe it will stick with me, maybe it won't. I love seeing what others are up to and just taking photos is fun....

Just a hat for my 5th child Casey. (very good friend of first born)

Baby blanket for cousin's new born baby boy. I am trying to use up stash here and I love simple crochet patterns that don't involve much thought but allow me to relax and 'create' all at the same time. I made this up but it's not rocket science or overly creative.
What are you making?

hospital crochet

It all started when I was making many gift hats for Christmas and my son B found a pattern in my pile for a retro style hat and he asked me if I would make one for him. He requested the colors he would like and I purchased them. Just a reminder, those colors are not for the Bears, he just likes these two together!!
I must admit that I love getting requests from the kids. I love th
at they want me to make them homemade crochet lovlies.
That being said, I quickly grabbed the supplies for that hat as we went out the door, so I could hook away while at last week's fever admit. I am pleased to show you that I did finish it. I love it. You guessed it, the other two little ones want one too.

Since I had some leftover hat yarn I thought it would be fun to make some fingerless gloves. This yarn was Debbie Bliss something...not cheap but I just bought 2 skeins of this one day last year when it was on sale. I thought they turned out cute and they fit! This will be real nice for those cold mornings on the computer.

Once I used that up, there still sat a small ball of leftover yarn in my bag. Since I have always wanted to make a soap saver bag, I went for it. This was fun to make and turned out pretty cute. I added a flair of fun fur to the top. I almost forgot to give credit to the blog who offered this pattern. There you go!
Just realized that there is no photo of cute boy with hat on....I will get on that post haste!

wavy fields of crazy crochet goodness

It took me awhile to get this on here but I did finally finish Secret Agent's (3rd son) crazy color requested crochet blanket. Now each child has their own crazy crochet, except I did officially do a ripple for Damsel girl. I actually ended up making this one super wide. The weird color combo he requested actually turned out pretty well in the end.

It amazes me how God makes us all so different, each child so unique with his own taste and preference. You see, I have never hated red but never felt any kinship with it. Never chose it often. My two oldest sons tended toward blues and greens. I am always a bit more swayed by deep eggplant rich purples. But Agent has always loved RED. He is drawn toward it. Loves it.
Well, here he is wrapped in it's wavy soft, goodness. I love it. He loves it! That is the most important part. Don't they together just make you want to reach out and eat 'em up? (my kids don't like me to say that after a certain age) :) I don't think I can ever stop though.

lemons into lemonade

Well, you all are going to laugh about what I did here. I was trying to hurry and make a baby blanket for my little new nephew. I only had until yesterday so it could travel on a plane with the grandmas that were going to visit him. I decided to make a hexagon granny blanket. I spent time making the cute little shapes just right and then noticed that I actually made a 5 sides granny!! Well, I didn't want to throw all that work away and fun scarves are so nice and 'in', so I just made lemonade out of those lemons. Here is my new scarf...ta da! I actually love it myself..what do you think?
Here is the real blanket I made for little nephew.

Is anyone else's blogger all messed up?? :)

homemadies

I will now attempt to show you some crochet things I made prior to Christmas that I couldn't show you due to giving it away for some people. I tried to make most of my gifts this year since it is full of love and money is a bit tight. I hope everyone was feeling loved by them.

I made the little cousins home made girly bags with something cute in them.

This is a crazy crochet blanket that I made for my granny! I really love my sweet granny. She goes with us to the hospital when she can. We get together for meals and game playing etc. She and my mom camped out at my house when we lived out of town, waiting forever it seemed for B to be born and thankfully they were there when he finally arrived. I remember her popping her head in every few seconds and wondering where the midwife was!! Yes, it's true...they were late for our home birth and she had to walk outside and tell them..."it's a boy!!"

Don't worry, all was well. They arrived right after he was born and he was perfect if a little fast coming out.

Here she is getting cozy posing for me.

Here is more stripey goodness, like a river of flowing yarn.

I made many hats this year that are soft and furry.

Why MAGNANIMOUS?

Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary of the American Language defines Magnanimity as such:
MAGNANIM'ITY, n. [L. magnanimitas; magnus, great, and animus, mind.] Greatness of mind; that elevation or dignity of soul, which encounters danger and trouble with tranquillity and firmness, which raises the possessor above revenge, and makes him delight in acts of benevolence, which makes him disdain injustice and meanness, and prompts him to sacrifice personal ease, interest and safety for the accomplishment of useful and noble objects.
